Sometimes your plants do not look happy. And that is expressed when their color turns off, their leaves lose strength or yellow, or have stopped flourishing. We share some home gardening tips for your plants.

Possibly you do everything you need, but for them to have a splendid and cheerful look maybe you need to apply some of those homemade tricks that expert gardeners always have on hand as an ace up their sleeve.

The most basic is knowing when to irrigate not by what the calendar says, but by using touch. “In most cases, indoor plants do not survive because of excess water,” explains Eduardo Azna, responsible for gardening Navarro Floristería. “So if we check that the soil is dry with our fingers before watering again, we avoid rotting the roots.”

But there are other tricks less known and that can return to your plants the lost vitality.

The home gardening tricks and tips

1. Try to water without limehome gardening

“Rainwater is the ideal. If it is not possible to pick it up, another option is to let some water rest a couple of days before watering. It is one of the home gardening tricks.

2. Air the earth

To do this, click with a stick. This allows the air and water to penetrate well and reach the roots, favoring a good development of the plant, according to the experts.

3. It stimulates the growth of new roots

The plants that grow in pots end with the earth full of roots. “When transplanting them to a larger pot, it is often convenient to cut a part of the roots, stimulating the growth of new roots,” suggests Eduardo.

4. Give more hours of light

If your plants do not give flowers, give them more hours of light. Many flowers require at least six hours of sunshine to sprout. Plants need the sun to make photosynthesis, so if they do not get enough sun, they get stressed. One of the first things that makes a stressed plant is to get rid of its flowers and buds and put all its resources to stay alive. Remember: you will know if it lacks light when it grows tall and ungainly when it directs its leaves and branches desperately in the direction of the sun.

5. Use bicarbonate, it is a harmless ally

In general, the public is unaware of the potential of such a humble and economic product as bicarbonate, but it is a great ally of your plants as a pesticide and fungicide. “Being as it is so innocuous for the human being, for domestic animals, and for the environment, we have plenty of reasons to substitute toxic, very expensive products that seriously harm the environment and, above all, our health”, explains Jesús Arnau, gardener and co-author of Agenda for the organic garden and garden. “It is enough to dilute a tablespoon of baking soda in a liter of water and we have already prepared our preventive remedy to maintain the health of our plants.”

6. Make homemade pest repellents

The bugs often cause havoc and many times we do not know. “The insects that are never missing in a plant are aphids, better known as aphids, woodlice and white fly,” says Carlos Rebolleda Sánchez, head of the plant section at Fronda Centros de Jardinería. “They are biting, sucking insects that feed on the wisdom of our plants. A very useful remedy is to spray them with soap and water. In a one-liter water sprayer, pour 4 tablespoons of oil for 2 of Fairy soap. We mix and pulverize the plant. This creates a film on the leaves that repels and prevents insects from perching on them. ”

7. Take advantage of unsuspected nutrients

If you have an aquarium with fish, you have at the same time a source of food for plants. Carlos Rebolleda explains how to do it: “Every time you clean the aquarium and extract the water, instead of discarding it, use it to water your plants. This wastewater has organic waste such as feces or algae, essential and natural elements for plant nutrition. They provide a large amount of nitrogen, favoring the growth and greenness of all of them. ” This expert gardener also reminds us that if you have a pool and decide not to treat it with chemicals during the winter, you can use that water rich in algae to water your plants and give them a contribution of fertilizer that will keep them sparkling. This is another tricks for home gardening.

8. Much greener leaves

That your indoor plants lose their intense green is a very common problem. Carlos Rebolleda has a home remedy that will surprise you: “If they have lost the greenness of the leaves or are yellowish, and the nerves are strongly observed, the plant has a clear symptom of ferric chlorosis, that is, lack of iron. Solving it is very simple: just take some nails from our toolbox (if they are slightly oxidized better) and stick them in the ground. As we apply to water to the pot, due to humidity, the nail will oxidize and provide iron to the plant. In a very short time, we will see how the greenery recovers. Important !: do not wait for the plant to show the iron chlorosis if you want to keep it always green; contributes iron regularly. “
