As winter approaches, you might think that there’s little to be done in the garden. However, if you want to properly winterise your garden and equipment, there are plenty of things to do to prepare for the months of colder weather. Here are some important tasks that can be completed in November in preparation:

Tidy up patios and paths

It’s not the most exciting of jobs but it’s an important one nonetheless. Areas that see foot traffic should be swept of leaves and debris to keep them slip free during the cold weather. Sweep areas like pathways, patios and driveways to remove anything that might become slippery and encourage the growth of algae or moss, for example.

Wet leaves

If left, can cause drains to clog up and will also ruin the clean lines of a smart garden by looking messy when they clump up in corners, for example when wet and soggy.

Store things away

Anything that normally sits out in the garden should be put away during bad weather as they can suffer frost damage and get very grubby and worn out if left out through winter. This could include items like garden furniture, children’s toys, ornaments, tools or anything else you can see that doesn’t need to be out. Before storing items, be sure to give them a good wipe over so they get stored in a dry and clean condition. For garden seat cushions, it can be a good idea to store in a bag so wildlife don’t get tempted to hibernate in the material.

Grass

You might be surprised to learn that our lawns continue to grow even in winter but most of the growth occurs underground. The roots are busy during the winter supporting the grass and preparing for spring. Help out your lawn by removing obstacles and allowing as much daylight as possible to get through to the grass. This will help your lawn come the spring. On a mild weather day, give the lawn a trim and apply some Autumn/Winter feed.

Equipment

Once you’ve given the grass one last trim and applied the feed, it’s time to service your mower before storing away for the winter. A serviced mower will last longer, have sharper blades and perform better. If you need Mountfield Spares, visit a site like https://www.diyspareparts.com/parts/mountfield

Planting

If you’re quick, November is not too late to plant some flowering bulbs for spring. Daffodils, crocus and tulips can still be planted in time for spring.

Lighting

When you look out onto your garden in winter, there is no need to see a bare, dark and depressing landscape. Make the most of those bare branches and shrubs by installing some uplighters to create a dramatic scene. Recessed lights are a great idea for paths or patios to make walking easier as well as bringing some warmth to your exterior during the cold weather.
