How to water the orchids

Orchids are one of the most popular indoor plants in recent years. Not in vain, we must also recognize that it is one of the most aesthetic and beautiful plants we can have in our house, as they offer a natural touch, but at the same time elegant, in any environment. However, despite its popularity, these are plants that not everyone knows How to water the orchids properly.

In this sense, one of the most important aspects that must be taken into account is knowing how to irrigate the orchids in an appropriate way, since, far from what may seem, are plants that, most times, support the excess water badly. If you want to know when and how to water the orchids so as not to damage them.

How to water the orchids?

Among the main things you have to take into account to irrigate orchids is their root type. Orchids are plants that have, in their natural habitat, roots outside the earth, growing along other plants or trees, or even stones. In this way, they are roots that are well adapted to the air and that, in fact, require an environment that is moist but not waterlogged.

How to water the orchids

In fact, if the roots of the orchids were long submerged in water, it is more likely that, sooner or later, they would end up rotting or becoming sick. Taking into account that these are roots of this type, we can make an idea that the form of irrigation should adapt to them, avoiding excess water but, at the same time, too much dryness.

What substrate to use in orchids?

Another of the most important aspects that must be taken into account in the care of orchids, including the elements related to their irrigation, is the substrate they use. Although the orchids that are sold in nurseries and garden stores usually have a synthetic substrate (which is not the most suitable for these plants, although it is the cheapest), ideally they should have a biological substrate.

In this sense, when talking about a biological substrate, we are referring to a substrate made from wood and moss. This type of substrate, being very porous, allows the correct oxygenation of the roots, at the same time allowing to maintain an adequate humidity. If your orchids do not have an adequate substrate, it is best to replace them with one of these characteristics that, in fact, you can find in many specialized stores.

Likewise, the biological substrate will be a good guide that can indicate when is a good time to water an orchid, since it is a substrate that does not tend to get wet but, at the same time, does not dry too quickly. It is best to feel the substrate with your hand and, when it starts to dry, water the orchid.

When and how to water an orchid?

Taking into account all the above, as well as the very nature of the orchids, the ideal will be to water the orchids just a little before the substrate begins to give samples of drying. Likewise, it will also be important to avoid excess water in the bottom plate of the pot. Although a small amount of water in this dish will not be a problem, an excess that could endanger the health of the plant.

Another aspect that must be taken into account when watering orchids will be the climate and environment in which they are in each case. It must be considered that an orchid that is inside a room rather than an exterior, as well as the humidity and temperature level of each case, the presence of air conditioners or heating, etc., will not be the same. All these elements influence the amount and frequency of water that the orchid needs to grow correctly. In turn, makes it very complicated to stipulate a specific date or frequency of watering these plants.

As a summary, it can be considered that the correct thing will be to water the orchids whenever the substrate starts to dry, as well as to avoid an excess of water both in the irrigation and in the accumulation of this in the pot.
